Years ago, after raising five children, I decided to return to school and continue my studies in English Literature. My two grown daughters (both mental health clinicians) suggested that I forego English and pursue a graduate degree in counseling instead. I had never considered this profession. After 20 years in the field, I am so grateful I did! Coming to counseling later in life has empowered me to combine theoretical knowledge with my practical lived experience. As a 74-year-old clinician, there isn't much I haven't seen, heard, or experienced. This perspective helps me connect with my clients, whatever their age. My mother always told me that life wasn't meant to be easy--and it isn't. I respect and admire my clients. It takes courage to look at yourself and the things in your life that aren’t working. Changing those things takes strength and tenacity, and you don't have to do it alone.
